Tribute Bands or the Real McCoy?

Apparently I am responsible for verbally forcing from a great distance another human being to attend a Floyd tribute band’s gig. I was unaware I had such powers and wonder what else I can do with them. A phone call from the said concert left me in little doubt that I wasn’t missing anything but that may well have been due to the poor reception and the missing ambience of actually being there which was totally lost via wireless transmission. From what I could discern, they were hitting a few familiar notes but seemed to be trying to make up for any lack by increasing volume. By the last phone call, it had increased to the point of not being able to hear anything other than the word ‘tonight’. What it is that is to happen or not happen tonight has been entirely lost in Another Brick in the Wall complete with childrens choir.

So this raises the question… are tribute bands worth their salt? I argued last evening that you have to admire them for having a go. To mimic an already famous band takes some skill and courage since they are aspiring to reproduce a specific sound, already attained. Then again… if it’s already attained… what’s the point? Is there as much merit in immitation as originality? I’d be inclined to say not unless the immitation is note for note perfect. A carbon copy seems a little pointless for the sake of it. Why be unoriginal?

That aside.. I have managed for the first time to watch the Fifth Element without missing the start. It didn’t really make much difference.

I’ve been to a couple of ‘Queen’ tribute bands (under duress) and have to say that I did actually enjoy them to some extent. Perhaps because I knew the words and could sing along to the tune (with countless others) .. Perhaps it was because they were actually quite good at immitating the great Freddie Mercury, even had his movement/actions off to a tee…
Or perhaps it was all down to the couple of pints of Guinness that made my ears wobbly…. ?
Given the choice though.. I’d much rather have a digitally mastered perfectly syncronised Album made in a soundproof studio anytime.. I can add my own background noise for further enjoyment…

my thoughts…
tribute bands are in it for the money, when “the Real McCoy” are more likely to be about the music, even though tribute bands might be more professional - better musicians etc. than the real ones.

I’m sure Nebby (Nebgirl) would disagree with most of your comments, everybody wants their 15 minutes of fame and if immitating a group thats no longer around (for whatever reason) is their way of getting that 15 minutes, then good luck to them…. and how else am I going to get my ABBA fix if I cant listen to AbbaUK for goodness sake.
By the way, does anybody still have Nebby’s 15 minutes of fame ? .. Those lovely long legs were music to my ears… !!

Moving on from ‘Tribute Bands’ .. I hear that ‘The Hebrons’ are to become the 1st brit group to host a virtual concert in ‘Second Life’ where people can live out their secret desires and fantasy’s in an alternative existence.
The Hebron’s already have a large online fanbase after putting their music on MySpace, Bebo and YouTube.
I think I’ll have to design my own animated avatar and boogie on down.. man..
If I do, you’ll be the first to know all about it… now… what wild fantasy do I ……. .. Mmmmm….
