False Economy

DIY is supposedly a cheaper way to go about things but when I stop to consider the time I’ve spent installing a kitchen, I would have been better off working and paying somebody else to do the job. The satisfaction of doing it yersel is quite another matter. It still needs tiled (haven’t bought those yet) the laminate floor put down and an extractor fitted. So far so good but there were a few delays for ’snags’. You know…. those unforeseen things that hold you back until you go get the bits you haven’t got in order to do the unforeseen bit. Having to still use the kitchen, it being the only one I’ve got, with all this going on wasn’t ideal either. Then there was the problem of everything from the kitchen being stored in the living room which meant it was also out of commission. No sprawling on the sofa, just eat, hammer holes in walls and sleep with a few hours of paying work thrown in just to keep the bank manager off my back. Thankfully, it’s all more or less back to normal.

As for blogging, the break from it could have been much longer. I think the novelty of typing crap on an almost daily basis has worn off. What indeed is the point?

Your right, DIY isnt all its cracked up to be, and by the time you buy every little item needed to complete the job, You’d probably have been better off getting a man in to do the job properly. By that I mean a ‘professional tradesman’ I wasn’t inferring you couldnt do the job yourself cause your a mere woman, a female of the species. Maybe I should stop now.

Being a mere woman does have its drawbacks. I had to wait for help for the stuff I just simply wasn’t strong enough to do. It’s frustrating! If I had your muscles, I wouldn’t see any of you in my way! :p

There are two huge conglomerate stores that cater to the ego of egomaniacal yuppies whom think they can do anything, Home Depot and Lowe’s. I thought that when they started their accent into equiping the entire USA with cheap, Chinese-made tools my trade would suffer. Wrong!

I’ve nothing against amateurs decorating or learning fancy painting, but when it comes to the more structural matters, following building codes I fear for D-I-Yer’s safety.

It does seem funny some days when I see mom & pop types roll in with a trailer to pick up a load of drywall. Makes me wonder if everyone in America does their own construction, or are just too cheap and eager to punish their bodies!
